Around the automotive water cooler, you most certainly hear some pretty crazy stories. There’s really no telling what could happen in the world of cars, especially with so many different makes and models and different facets of the hobby to get into. This time, it just so happens that the crazy story is coming from the owner of a brand-new (almost) C7 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport. On the surface, the car looks like it just rolled off of the showroom floor but, one small detail would cause it to be totaled and it’s kind of hard to justify. If you’ve looked over this thing for hours upon hours with your best magnifying glass, odds are that you still probably wouldn’t be able to figure out why that is.
According to the owner of the car on Corvette Forum, he just so happened to be driving down the street one day, when all of a sudden, a car in front of him chucked out some unidentifiable objects that just so happened to run over. When you take a look at the damage they caused to the underside of the car, they hit hard enough to crack some metal. The owner claims that the pieces banged up some components and cracked a piece that General Motors called the “rear transmission tunnel,” a part that they say isn’t serviceable.
Now, as you can imagine, such a small crack like this that, on the surface, seems to be quite a ridiculous reason to total an entire car struck a chord with the insurance company. For the sticker price on these things, I’m sure that they were hesitant to shell out the money for that kind of fix but, as Jalopnik tells us, when Chevrolet reported that replacing the part would make it structurally unsound and welding it wouldn’t be covered by warranty. Therefore, the car would head to an auction out in Iowa as a totaled car. Essentially, if you’re buying the story behind this, somebody is going to be getting themselves a pretty much brand-new Grand Sport at auction with just 8000 miles on the clock, all for a fraction of the price. If you can live with the fact that the car has a salvage title, somebody will be getting a heck of a deal on this machine.
